The Algiers 20xx competition international ideas competition sought disruptive ideas for urban design. The scope of the intervention was the bay of Algiers. Entrants were challenged to imagine a design intervention in an area defined as The Matrix. The intervention would create a strong and unprecedented link through the surrounding urban grid.
My proposal titled the ‘Superliminal Matrix’ placed 2nd in the competition out of 439 registered participants from 56 countries.
The Superliminal Matrix: An epicentre for connectivity.
Using biomorphism and biomimicry as precedents, the superliminal matrix proposes a new connective tissue within the Bay of Algiers that consolidates disparate elements of mobility and communication infrastructure into a single entity. It reflects an approach to technology that is not subservient – the building as machine – but rather, egalitarian. The structure assumes the role of both landmark and critical infrastructure.
